The Castle of Belmonte belongs to one of the four historic towns of Castelo Branco and one of the twelve in Portugal. From here Pedro Álvares Cabral left to discover Brazil.
Its construction dates from the 13th century. In 1258 D. Afonso III authorizes D. Egas Fafe to build a Tower in this Castle.
Of military and civil architecture, Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline and 18th century, with an urban setting, it has an irregular oval layout, built in masonry and granite stonework and is located at an elevation of 599 meters above sea level.
The ruined Palace is noteworthy, expanded by the father of Pedro Álvares Cabral, which extends along the western side, integrated into the walls, which is enriched by a Manueline Window.
Here Jewish people arrived with the hope to find a place to live in peace.
This Monument has been classified as a National Monument since 1927.

De arquitetura militar e civil, românico, gótico, manuelino e setecentista, de enquadramento urbano, apresenta planta de traçado oval irregular, erguido em alvenaria e cantaria de granito e situa-se numa elevação na cota de 599 metros acima do nível do mar.
É de salientar o Paço arruinado, ampliado pelo pai de Pedro Alvares Cabral, que se estende pelo lado ocidental, integrado nas muralhas, que é enriquecido por uma Janela Manuelina.
Aqui chegaram povos Judaicos em busca de um lugar para viver em paz.
Este Monumento está classificado com Monumento Nacional desde 1927.
