The Castle of Penas Roias was founded by the Templars in the twelfth century at the end of the reign of D. Afonso Henriques.
Along with the castle of Mogadouro, also belonging to the Order of the Temple and the Castle of Algoso of the “Ordem do Hospital”, it formed part of a defensive line against the Kingdom of León.
At the beginning of the 16th century, the Castle still maintained its military importance, having been designed for the first time in 1509 by Duarte d’Armas, squire of D. Manuel I.
In 1758 the castle was already in ruins.

O castelo de Penas Roias foi fundado pelos Templários no século XII no fim do reinado de D. Afonso Henriques.
Junto com o castelo de Mogadouro, também da Ordem do Templo e do Castelo de Algoso da Ordem do Hospital, formava parte de uma linha defensiva frente ao Reino de Leão.
Nos começos do século XVI o castelo ainda mantinha a sua importância militar, tendo sido desenhado pela primeira vez no ano de 1509 por Duarte d’Armas, escudeiro de D. Manuel I.
No ano de 1758 o castelo já se encontrava em ruínas.
