Although the exact date of construction of the Castle of Terena is unknown, the analysis of its morphological characteristics and the documentary evidence suggests that its foundation dates back to the reign of D. Afonso IV.

Since the year 2000, the Castle dependencies were used as a setting for the annual meeting of Inter-Medieval, an international association of medieval historical recreation societies founded that year on the initiative of Ordem da Cavalaria do Sagrado Portugal. One of the highlights of these encounters is the recreation of a medieval tournament.
