There is practically a circular wall remaining from Castelo Melhor’s Castle, surrounding a hill with an extraordinary view of valleys and hills as far as the eye can see, from where we can admire the typical almond trees of the region.
The original work is from the Kingdom of León and dates back to the beginning of the 13th century, when there was an intense fortification of the Riba-Côa line, an area constantly disputed by the Portuguese and Castilian monarchs.
With the Treaty of Alcanices (1297), Castelo Melhor passed to the Portuguese crown, integrating, from then on, the national border.
It is one of the few villages in Portugal where the entrance is through a square in which a Leonese king is honoured.

Do Castelo de Castelo Melhor resta praticamente uma muralha de planta circular, rodeando um monte com uma vista extraordinária para vales e montes a perder de vista, de onde deslumbramos as típicas amendoeiras da região.
A obra original é leonesa e remonta aos inícios do século XIII, altura a que corresponde uma intensa fortificação da linha de Riba-Côa, zona constantemente disputada pelos monarcas português e castelhano.
Com o Tratado de Alcanices (1297), Castelo Melhor passou para a coroa portuguesa, integrando, a partir daí, a raia nacional.
É das poucas povoações em Portugal onde a entrada se faz por um largo em que se homenageia um rei leonês.
