Pateira de Fermentelos is the largest natural lake in the Iberian Peninsula. There are habitats, ecosystems and species with national and international protection statutes.
In this context, there are the “bateiras” – traditional boats – which allow, even today, the maintenance of a significant surface free of water, preventing the advance of the swamp.
It is a very simple vessel and was probably one of the first to cross rivers, long before the formation of the lagoon. It was used in fundamental tasks, such as: crossing people or cattle, picking and transporting herbs, fishing, hunting and recreation.
As Bateiras da Pateira de Fermentelos
A Pateira de Fermentelos é a maior lagoa natural da Península Ibérica. Aí ocorrem habitats, ecossistemas e espécies com estatutos de protecção nacional e internacional.
Neste contexto, surgem as bateiras – embarcações tradicionais – que permitem, ainda hoje a manutencão de uma significativa superfície livre de água, impedindo o avanço do pântano.
É uma embarcação muito simples e foi provavelmente das primeiras a atravessar os rios, muito antes da formação da lagoa. Era utilizada em tarefas fundamentais, como: a travessia de pessoas ou gado, apanha e transporte de herbáceas, pesca, caça e recreio.
