Almeida is located in the district of Guarda (Beira Alta) in Portugal.
Its medieval fortress was part of the so-called Linha do Tejo, the frontier of the kingdom at the end of the 13th century, and its function was to populate and defend the lands of Riba-Côa.
With its defence remodelled at the time of the War of Restoration (1640-1668), it is considered the most monumental of the strongholds in the country, and the main fortification of Beira from the 17th century onwards.
Almeida’s name is inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, since Napoleon Bonaparte considered the explosion of the magazine and the taking of the stronghold, in 1810, as one of the victories of “La Grande Armée”.
The capture of Almeida by the French took place on a Sunday in August and the village went up in flames. The following day a blizzard extinguished the flames so since that day Almeida’s patron saint was called “Senhora das Neves”.

O sua fortaleza medieval integrava a chamada Linha do Tejo, fronteira do reino em fins do século XIII, e tinha como função o povoamento e defesa das terras de Riba-côa.
Com a sua defesa remodelada à época da Guerra da Restauração (1640-1668) é considerada a mais monumental das praças-fortes do país, e a principal fortificação da Beira a partir do século XVII.
O nome de Almeida encontra-se inscrito no Arco do Triunfo em Paris, uma vez que Napoleão Bonaparte considerou a explosão do paiol e a tomada da praça-forte, em 1810, como uma das vitórias de “La Grande Armée”.
A tomada de Almeida pelos Franceses ocorreu num domingo do mês de Agosto tendo a vila ficado em chamas. No dia seguinte um nevão extinguiu as chamas, desde esse dia a sua padroeira passou a se chamar “Senhora das Neves”.
