The “Forte de São João Baptista”, also referred to as “Forte da Berlenga”, is located on an islet on the south-eastern side of the island of Berlenga Grande, in the Berlengas archipelago, Peniche municipality, Leiria district, in Portugal.
Associated with the defensive system of the Peniche coast, the monument is included in the Berlengas’ Natural Reserve. The archipelago has been classified as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO since June 2011.
In Mannerist style, it has an irregular octagonal plan, with the sides facing the sea torn by 11 gunboats, at regular intervals, on a sloped basement, with the old casemates and the magazine added to the sides facing the land.
The fort is connected to Berlenga Grande by a stone masonry bridge, over arcades, with a small anchorage on the north side.
O “Forte de São João Baptista” também referido como “Forte da Berlenga”, localiza-se em um ilhéu no lado sudeste da ilha de Berlenga Grande, no arquipélago das Berlengas, concelho de Peniche, distrito de Leiria, em Portugal.
Associado ao sistema defensivo da costa de Peniche, o monumento encontra-se incluído na Reserva Natural das Berlengas. O arquipélago encontra-se classificado como Reserva Mundial da Biosfera pela UNESCO desde junho de 2011.
Em estilo maneirista, apresenta planta no formato octogonal irregular, com as faces viradas ao mar rasgadas por 11 canhoneiras, dispostas a intervalos regulares, sobre embasamento em talude, com as antigas casamatas e o paiol adossadas às faces viradas para terra.
O forte liga-se à Berlenga Grande por uma ponte em alvenaria de pedra, sobre arcadas, com um pequeno ancoradouro, do lado norte.
